Be An Overcomer

Scripture Reading for the day:  I Corinthians 16:15-18

Scripture Quote: “for there is a wide open door for a great work here, and many people are responding. But there are many who oppose me.” I Corinthians 16:9 (NASB)

God constantly gives us opportunities to move ahead in life. He is always with us, patiently waiting for us to grow closer and learn more. But whenever we move closer to God, there is always increased opposition from the enemy. God longs for us to reach our full potential and overcome the many temptations and obstacles Satan slams us with. He wants us to be overcomers.

When you step out in faith and the opposition comes, stand firm – Then, as you can, press on toward the goal. We must remember that Jesus is with us and that He is our source of strength. The price we pay now is nothing compared to the treasures that await us in heaven. Trust what God has promised all who love Him and obey His commandments.

Meditation for the day: “I learned that life is not just a destination but a journey. While the expedition can be long and arduous, it can be full of beauty and pleasure as well.” Wayne Holmes in, ‘The Heart of a Father’

Memory Verse: “but after we had already suffered and been mistreated in Philippi, as you know, we had the boldness in our God to speak to you the gospel of God amid much opposition.” I Thessalonians 2:2 (NASB)

Emmanuel - God With Us

By, Toni Smothers

Scripture Reading for the day:  Luke 2:5-21

Scripture Quote: “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.”  Isaiah 7:14 (NIV)

Jesus came to us as an infant, born through the power of the Holy Spirit to the Virgin Mary. Joseph, her betrothed, believed when the angel told him that Mary was truly a virgin and that he should take her to be his wife. The faith that Mary and Joseph demonstrated was tremendous.

Jesus was born in a stable. He was wrapped in bands of material, and was laid where cattle were fed. Shepherds came from all around to see the baby the angels told them had come to be their Savior.

Jesus had a very poor beginning, yet, because of His life, we have everything we need to live a life that pleases God. It was all given to us by God's own power, when we learned that he had invited us to share in his wonderful goodness - when he sent Jesus to dwell among us, to teach us and show us by His example, how to love in its truest sense.

Today’s meditation: Celebrate Christ’s birth and what His coming has done for believers everywhere!

Memory Verse: “But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” Luke 2:10-11 (NIV)

Follow In His Steps

Scripture Reading for the day:  Philippians 2:1-13

Scripture Quote: “For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps.” I Peter 2:21 (NASB)

We can walk with Christ each day, following His example of obedience to the Father. The more we think about emulating Jesus, the more our new disposition develops. Our path is joyful, full of love, which is all born from obedience. We demonstrate all this as our actions are a witness to all around us.

It is the attitudes of our mind that can change our behavior and thinking. Are we concerned for others and do we want to share the gospel as the gift of good news it really is? Can we help shine light into the darkness? We must have a heart that is willing to examine itself and make changes as the Holy Spirit leads us.

We all struggle with sin and pride and many past mistakes that can often make us feel broken inside. All these things can be relieved by simply turning them over to God. Trust deeply and drink deeply of the Living Waters - Following more closely in Jesus steps will become a permanant goal.

Meditation for the day: “The gospel is like fish. It must be caught fresh every day.” John Hall

Memory Verse: “I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For the proud will be humbled, but the humble will be honored.” Luke 18:14 (NASB)

Deep and Eternal Peace

Scripture Reading for the day: John 15:18 – 16:15

Scripture Quote: “I am leaving you with a gift – peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give isn’t like the peace the world gives. So don’t be troubled or afraid. Remember what I told you: I am going away but I will come back to you again. If you really love me you will be really happy for me, because now I can go to the Father, who is greater than I am. I have told you these things before they happen so that you will believe when they do happen.” John 14:27-29

The peace of the Holy Spirit is not the absence of conflict but a deep and eternal peace that gives us confident assurance in all circumstances. We will face further persecution, Jesus said as much Himself. But the peace He has left us will make us able to press on.

We are to take courage in spite of the inevitable struggles we face as Christians because we are never truly alone anymore. Jesus will never abandon us. If we can keep an eternal perspective, we can claim the peace of the Holy Spirit in the very worst of times.

Meditation for the day: As Christians, we should expect continuous tension with an unbelieving, hostile world.

Memory Verse: “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

Ultimate Power

Ultimate Power

Scripture Reading for the day: Ephesians 1:1-23 (NKJ)

Scripture Quote: “Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers.” Ephesians 1:15-16

We were chosen by God before birth. The mighty power of God is available to all believers because of our connection to His ultimate power, through our Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit. This is the same power that raised Jesus from the dead and placed him at God’s right hand giving Him dominion over everything. Jesus is the head of our church. If we could fathom the incredible significance of being part of God’s family with His own power given to us as a gift of love, we would never be able to stop praising Him or doing good for His glory.

Every day we go about our lives occasionally praying and seeking the Holy Spirit’s guiding, but mostly forgetting to do that and forgetting also that God takes pleasure in us and we are precious to Him. We are tempted from every direction and lose our focus on God. We sin, even knowing that the power to overcome is within us. Then we ask God to forgive us. Each day we move closer to an intimate relationship with our Lord and a life that shows an increase in healthy fruit.

Meditation for the day: Remember your Lord and Savior all through the day and continually praise His forgiving grace. Tell someone else about Jesus today.

Memory Verse: “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.” Ephesians 3:20

Worship

Scripture Reading for the day: Isaiah 2:1-22

Scripture Quote: “And after his care, he uses part of the wood to make a fire to warm himself and bake his bread. Then – yes, it’s true – he takes the rest of it and makes himself a god for people to worship! He makes and idol and bows down and praises it! Then he takes what is left and makes his god: a carved idol! He say, you are my god!”” Isaiah 44:15 (NLT)

Imagine how sad our heavenly Father must be as he watches us worship all kinds of things other than Him. God is the one who created us, who we ultimately trust and who we look to for security and happiness. We know that He is in charge of our future,  yet, knowing all this, we still worship our jobs, our salaries, other people, or whatever, and think more often of them than our Almighty God. Who but a fool would make his own god who can’t possible help with real life issues?

We should be proud of belonging to God. He deserves all honor and glory and praise. God sent His only son and sacrificed His life, so that we might have life. He has loved us with an insurmountable love. False gods can’t love us and redeem us from our sins. God is the one and only true God and He deserves all of our love and reverence.

Meditation for today: You can stand in the approval of God again - Admit to God that you have made a mistake and tell Him how much you love Him.

Memory Verse: “Jesus replied, You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.”  Matthew 22:37 (NLT)

Worry

Scripture Reading for the day: Isaiah 41:11-20

Scripture Quote: “God the LORD, created the heavens and stretched them out. He created the earth and everything in it. He gives breath and life to everyone in the world.” Isaiah 42:5 (NLT)

Do you find yourself sometimes worrying over your circumstances? Did you realize that worrying is sinful? As Christians we must surrender all our concerns to our heavenly Father. He can solve any problem you can give Him - God delivers. When He makes a promise, he keeps it. He is completely trustworthy. He wants to take you to new levels in your life as you hand more and more of your concerns over to Him.

We must learn to squelch our tendency to be independent and self-reliant. In a society that verbally and monetarily rewards these behaviors, it’s hard to see these traits as less than admirable. When you abide by the world’s rules and deal with things on your own strength, you will eventually face the fact that you are worried over things you have no power to change. God will let you suppose that you have control of those problems, but you will always suffer the consequence of choosing to worry. Until you relinquish total control, God will not take it from you. Why not give Him everything and begin living the abundant life He has for you.

Meditation for today: Relinquish all things into God’s loving care.

Memory Verse: “Don’t be afraid for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. I will help you. I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.” Isaiah 41:10 (NLT)
