Write His Word On Your Heart

By, Toni Smothers

Scripture Reading: James 1:21-25

Scripture Quote: “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither-- whatever they do prospers.” Psalms 1:1-3 (NIV)

Sin can begin as a small, almost imperceptible thing. Then we focus a bit more attention toward it. We slip into mental indulgence, which further develops into stronger desire. Losing our footing from God's Way, we begin to delight in this desire and inevitably this ungodly thought process leads to sinful action. Does that sound kind of like over the top drama? But, it’s not. That's just what Satan wants us to think – That we are reasoning like religious fanatics, spewing that fire and brimstone. He says there's no harm in wondering about things in the world - After all, we can't hide away like scared rabbits. Right? Well, we really can't do the rabbit thing, because as cozy-easy as that may sound, we do need to function and live in this world.

So, deny seductive whispers and remember that we are no longer slaves to sin. We can always still choose it, but luckily we have one terrific guide book to teach us how to avoid sin and its consequences. Our help comes from the Lord and He always shows us the right path.

Today’s meditation: God’s ways lead to truth and joy.

Memory Verse: “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”  Psalms 119:105 (NIV)

We Are Not “Holier Than Thou”
By, Toni Smothers

Scripture Reading:  22Romans 7:18-22
Scripture link: http://www.biblestudytools.com/romans/passage/?q=romans+7:18-22

Scripture Quote: Gal 6:1 Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.

With few exceptions, both simple and brilliant people possess some level of discernment. Nevertheless, some think very little about God. We see ample opportunities to realize the existence of our Creator. Even so, the nonbeliever describes our world’s mysteries to be examples of their god, who is called, nature. It puzzles the Christian to imagine a brilliant mind upholding such nonsense.

However - They see Christians, the supposed ambassadors of faith in God, who still struggle with being egotistical, prideful and self-reliant. Sin chases after us our whole lives and unless we are rooted in Christ, sin can overwhelm us. As it is, sin still subtlety tricks us. Jesus’ friend and dedicated apostle, Paul, led so many to faith, but desperately struggled with sin. This age old turmoil plagues each of us as well. So, how will we lead another to faith? It's the old boulder in the eye theory: We cannot lead others to the Father if we ourselves show the unbeliever an inability to understand the latent sin in us all. In other words, we are none of us better than another. You never want an unbeliever to look at you and see hypocrisy. You are not holier, but privileged, so walk in grateful humility.

Today’s Meditation: There but through the grace of God, go I.

Memory Verse: “Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” James 1:22 (NIV)

The Beautiful Path

By, Toni Smothers

Scripture Reading: Galatians 5:19-21

Scripture Quote: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--His good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2 (NIV)

It's so easy to slip into conformity of this world. We work, shop, and interact with the lost daily. We must constantly draw on the power of the Holy Spirit to navigate. Without Him, we will fail to live up to the standard we know to be right. In Romans we are told to hate what is evil and cling to what is good, which is a simple thing when we are in the presence of God's people in the house of the Lord. Not so easy, however, out in the world where we must still participate.

But consider: Can we talk in an ungodly choice of words to blend in with man, then address our heavenly Father with praise and adoration on our stained lips? We do recognize and abhor blaspheming the name of God, but foolish talk and coarse joking abound in secular society till they almost seem normal to our ears. Are we children of the highest God, or fence sitters, taking part in the good along with the questionable? We can choose to jump off that fence where temptation hovers and fall into the arms of our loving Father, where purity and faithfulness guide and protect our minds and hearts from evil.

Today’s meditation: You are called to be like Jesus.

Memory Verse: “I will not look with approval on anything that is vile. I hate what faithless people do; I will have no part in it.” Psalms 101:3 (NIV)

Spiritual Gifts
By, Toni Smothers

Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:4-11

Scripture quote: Ephesians 4:7-11 (NIV) But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.  This is why it says: "When he ascended on high, he took many captives and gave gifts to his people."  does "he ascended" mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions? He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.) So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers.

Doesn't it seem amazing to think that God has given each of His children at least one spiritual gift? That is exactly what He says in His Word. We believers need to know what our spiritual gift is so that we can claim it and refine it and have it at the ready should it be required to serve the body of Christ. We should use our gift to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace.

Since modesty and subservience are prerequisites to service for God, we all must deliberately own and improve our ability to handle our gift with a pure heart in His sight. In proportion to the grace and light that we have received from God, let us exercise our ability to encourage and build others up, reminding them to find grace and light they have also received from our Father, God.

Today’s meditation: Thank God for your gift and use it for His glory.

Memory Verse: “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.” Romans 12:6a (NIV)

Our Story Is Our Truth

By, Toni Smothers

Scripture Reading: Matthew 24:10-14

Scripture Quote: “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” 1Peter 3:15 (NIV)

We may not possess elaborate, eloquent, verbiage to persuade nonbelievers to know Christ. Maybe just that lack, that inability of communication, makes many Christians who love God, afraid to speak up for Him. And it is understandable that a person can fear rejection or ridicule. But His nature, power, will, justice, goodness and truth can pretty much speak for themselves. So, attempting to explain the immensity, omniscience, omnipresence and omnipotence of our God is too huge for most of us.

However, we Christians can describe how Christ personally delivered us. We can simply explain the impact Jesus has had on our lives. The path we were on can be compared with that of the one we are presently traveling. To tell of the great transformation of our hearts and souls is not a thing that can be dismissed as inadequate. If it happened to us, we will prove evidence of that transformation simply by our current lifestyle. Is our life spent honoring God? Our lives testify to the glory and power of God's mighty forgiveness and incomprehensible desire to save us all from the law of sin and death.

Today’s meditation: Don’t fear sharing your evident transformation.

Memory Verse: “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.” Romans 8:16 (NIV)

Our Purpose Is Certain

By, Toni Smothers

Scripture Reading: Psalms 119:105-112

Scripture Quote: Lev 18:3-5 You must not do as they do in Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. Do not follow their practices. You must obey my laws and be careful to follow my decrees. I am the LORD your God. Keep my decrees and laws, for the person who obeys them will live by them. I am the LORD.

Under God's provision, we can discover what God's will is for our lives, by first reading His Word. We must understand His previous actions and statues through many of the Spirit inspired stories that have been recorded in the Bible. But we’d rather have God miraculously inform us of His purpose for us now, without having to first study His Word. While miraculous insights have probably occurred in the lives of some believers, it’s doubtful that it will happen to the rest of us.

Before He will illuminate His direction for us, we need to know Him more intimately. There are statutes from God that are part of our heritage and knowing that He has left this information readily accessible, should be the joy of our hearts. None of God's own want to rebel against Him, or to turn away from Him. But we sometimes forget that we really can't do anything good in our own strength because we must depend on God for the strength that enables us to abstain from evil, or from being lazy in His sight.

Today’s meditation: Study His Book

Memory Verse: Plasms 119:91 Your laws endure to this day, for all things serve you.

Love

By, Toni Smothers

Scripture Reading: Matthew 22:36-40

Scripture Quote: (NIV) Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. . . 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a (NIV)

God commands that we love Him and one another in all circumstances. So, do you wake up shinning with love, or are you a bit groggy and grumpy? Maybe you are a “morning person.” So you hug your spouse and kids, maybe pet your dog. It’s easy to love your family. Still, have you never spoken a rude or cruel word to any of them?

Love satisfies us and can make us feel supremely complete. But speeding through our day, we can often throw love in the back seat while charging through the list of things we must do before we can stop long enough to realize that love is missing.  That's why we were short with the lady at the cleaners. We saw some friends on the street but were too rushed to pause for any interaction, other than a smile and quick wave. "Love your neighbor as yourself." Hmmm - And where was God in your hectic day? Just saying, maybe we need to give this love thing some serious thought.

Today’s meditation: To love is a decision to obey God.

Memory Verse:  "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16

Know God’s Word

By, Toni Smothers

Scripture Reading: Hebrews 4:12-16

Scripture Quote: “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (ESV)

Our bibles can lay around our homes collecting dust, or be worn out from dispensing life lessons and wisdom. Some of us profess faith in God but barely read His Word. Others can spout verse after verse from memory, but they are unkind and judgmental once they leave church. True believers will cherish the Word as if it were spun out of pure gold because it is the most valuable resource for abundant life.

The words in the bible are inspired by God and lay open the true nature and feelings of the soul. His truth is dispersed by means of parables and prophesies - There are true, often breath taking stories, as well as straight forward commands. Nothing common to man is omitted from its pages. Real people, who have made terrible mistakes, are generously featured within the bible – They are there to show us that they struggled and stumbled just like we do. Its truth has answers for each of us, if only we would diligently seek them out. Its power will awaken our consciences and lay bare the secret feelings of our hearts.  Great changes for the better in the moral world have been caused by the power of truth found in Almighty God’s Word.

Today’s meditation: Make serious study of the bible a priority.

Memory Verse: “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.” Isaiah 40:8 (ESV)

Helping Others

By, Toni Smothers

Scripture Reading: Matthew 25:35-40

Scripture Quote: “For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’” Deuteronomy 15:11 (ESV)

Scripture tells us that whatever kindness we do is accepted by the Lord as a jesture of kindness toward Him. The person we help is the person He loves. And it really is individual – Jesus loves each of us as if we were the only one. It gives our Savior joy to watch us love each other, encourage each other and share our blessings and gifts with each other. The is the family of God in a nutshell.

Can you imagine what our churches would be like if we dispensed tender affection at the entrance and a willingness to connect with and endure trails with our Christian siblings? Now imagine that love flowing out our doors into our communities. If we could offer loving commitment to the unsaved in place of judgement, would Christianity look very different to them? It's really true to realize that there is not one of us in a position to throw stones at any other. We are all inept and impure without the cleansing work of Jesus. So, give that love away. Give it to the lovely and give it to the unlovely. Jesus accepts and helps everyone who realizes that they need Him. So should we.

Today’s meditation: To give, to help, to care ... is to love.

Memory Verse: “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you…” John 15:12 (ESV)

Fulfillment of God’s Holy Law

By, Toni Smothers

Scripture Reading: Colossians 3:1-15

Scripture Quote: "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.  For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Matthew 5:17-18 (NIV)

The standard of God’s Holy Law is impeccable. It demands holiness, love and perfection, which is the character of God. We could never rise to those standards. But Jesus fulfilled every bit of the law by His life and death. The truth is that Jesus came to fulfill the law and thank God that He did because our very best efforts towards holiness, are like filthy rags in comparison to God’s Holy standards.

Jesus showed us what it meant to live out the heavenly standards of God, by always doing what pleased the Father. Because the Law’s penalty of sin is death, Jesus also fulfilled that requirement. He lovingly died at the hands of brutes. He was a substitutionary sacrifice in place of us, the sinners that He loves. The Lord Jesus wants to live in and through the lives of His believers, as we continually put our faith in Him.  Jesus fulfilled the Law, defeated death and rose victorious. He is now with the Father forever. Because He lives, we also will live.

Today’s meditation: Jesus fulfilled the law for us.

Memory Verse: “When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” Colossians 3:4 (NIV)
